MICHAEL HAYDE RECEIVES CAWELTI AWARD
Michael Hayde was honored with the Cawelti Award at our February meeting. Video of the presentation as well as the entire meeting will be posted later this month. I know all of us congratulate Michael on an award greatly deserved. Michael joins a group of deserving winners who have contributed to the Club's success over the years. (See a group photo at the bottom of this story.)
Michael Hayde has been a member of the MWOTRC since 1999. He served a one-year term as the Club's President in 2007, and is currently serving as its Archivist. Michael works for IBM by day, and in his spare time enjoys researching and writing about pop culture history. He has written two books: "My Name's Friday" and "Flights of Fantasy," about "Dragnet" and "Superman" respectively, and is currently working on a third. The Cawelti Award is the club's way of remembering one of its most unselfish and dedicated members. The award is presented yearly to the person deemed by the club members who best embodies Stan's spirit of concern for the hobby, selfless dedication to helping others.
Stan Cawelti was a modern Renaissance Man. In addition to Old Time radio, he could converse cogently about motion pictures, especially westerns, science fiction and adventure serials. Stan helped children at risk by tutoring and mentoring under the aegis of Exxon. He was a docent at the Air and Space Museum in Washington D. C. and was part of the crew involved in the Round-The-World flight of The Voyager.
Stan joined the MWOTRC about two years after the club formed. He was in with both feet right from the start. He made several presentations to the club. Bill Jacobson developed the idea of the "Road Show" and Stan made his most important contribution to the club by becoming deeply involved. The club would visit senior citizens' centers, retirement homes, or senior citizen daycare facilities and spend a couple of hours talking about the days when radio was the main home entertainment. The results were palpable and the after-show discussions were always rewarding for them and for us.
Stan was a mover for the club and one of its biggest fans and cheerleaders. The club is better in almost every way because Stan was part of it.
